Former SAP executive joins Docker to scale the company’s growth in the enterprise and drive the next wave of innovation
SAN FRANCISCO – May 2, 2017, 9:00am ET – Docker today announced that former Concur Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and SAP executive Steve Singh has joined the company as CEO. Steve brings over 20 years of experience in building and scaling world-class software companies including some of the most successful brands in technology. In his new role at Docker, Steve will be at the forefront of scaling Docker’s business, brand and continued innovation serving Docker’s customers, partners and community. He will also serve as Chairman of Docker’s board of directors. Ben Golub, Steve’s predecessor as CEO of Docker, will stay on as a director on Docker’s board.
“Over the past four years, Docker has grown at an incredible rate. We are now seeing widespread traction in the developer community and the enterprise market,” said Solomon Hykes, Founder and CTO, Docker. “Without Ben, Docker wouldn’t be in such an incredible position as a platform and as a company. Under his leadership, we built a world-class team and a huge, diverse community that is rewriting the rules of software development and distribution. Ben built the foundation for an exceptional company, and demand for Docker’s product is off the charts. With Steve’s unique expertise, we will build an organization capable of delivering on that demand, and serving our customers across the globe.”
Steve is a proven enterprise leader, having founded and built a category-creating company and a billion-dollar business at Concur before it was acquired by SAP in 2014. As the president of the business networks and applications group, and an executive board member at SAP, Steve was responsible for driving a multi-billion-dollar division of SAP that included Concur, SAP Ariba and SAP Fieldglass. Steve joins Docker at a time when the company is experiencing strong momentum in the enterprise software market with hundreds of commercial customers and the introduction of Docker Enterprise Edition, a complete platform that addresses the entire application lifecycle with integrated security, management and orchestration. Steve will work closely with Docker’s leadership team to continue to advance the Docker platform and drive customer, partner and community growth.
“Great businesses are built on a very simple principle, and that is to deliver sustainable value for customers,” said Steve Singh, Chairman and CEO of Docker. “As companies look to create a new generation of applications and services to bring their business into the global digital economy, many are turning to Docker for dramatic improvements in developer productivity and new operational and capital efficiencies. We are privileged to serve customers such as ADP, GE, Visa and MetLife in partnership with industry leaders such as Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture, HPE and Alibaba. I look forward to working with the entire Docker team as well as the broader Docker community to help usher in the new era of application computing. I believe that Docker, backed by its platform and fueled by innovation from its collaborative ecosystem, is on track to be the next great enterprise software company.”
“Steve’s success in building a software business from nothing to over a billion in revenue sets him apart, both as a strategist and a leader,” said Peter Fenton, General Partner at Benchmark Capital. “The team approached Steve to join the board to bring his expertise and passion for the Docker opportunity. Having operated as a director for the past year, Steve’s appreciation of the ‘once in a generation’ scale of the Docker opportunity, combined with the strength of the partnership between Solomon’s vision and Steve’s leadership, makes this a perfect match.”
Since Docker’s inception and subsequent pioneering of the container industry in 2013, the company has experienced rapid growth amounting to more than 12 billion downloads, a rich and innovative ecosystem that includes millions of developers, and hundreds of partner companies in addition to hundreds of Global 2000 customers. Docker’s industry-changing technology is accelerating an evolution of traditional technologies by addressing major enterprise initiatives – from hybrid cloud and microservices to application modernization.
