Jelastic DevOps PaaS launched a new version with native support of PHP 7 to provide customers with increased performance
Palo Alto, Calif. (PRWEB) January 13, 2016
Jelastic, Inc., the cloud company that provides DevOps PaaS for management of certified containers (Java, PHP, Ruby, Node.js, Python and .NET) and the ability to use custom Docker containers, today launched the new 4.3 version. The name of this release is Bond, Jelastic Bond, aptly named for the introduction of PHP 7 – or 007 – support.
“The PHP team and community did a great job to drastically improve the performance. We are thrilled to be early adopters of PHP 7 within the cloud market by providing a low barrier for migration from the previous versions of PHP. As all we know, developers love new features and easy entry point gives much faster adoption,” said Ruslan Synytsky, Jelastic CEO
“Getting people to upgrade from old unsupported versions of PHP has always been an issue for us. It is great to see Jelastic making it easy for customers to be proactive in this regard and combined with the improved performance and new features of this version I think Jelastic customers should be excited about this,” said Rasmus Lerdorf, Father of PHP.
Already in June, PHP 7 Beta was available for Jelastic customers as Docker container and now, after thorough testing together with community, we’ve added native support of the latest PHP version for certified containers. Being based on the refactored Zend Engine called PHPNG (PHP Next Generation), it shows a significant capacity boost compared to the legacy versions. This allows to increase your PHP applications’ performance in up to 2 times just through upgrading the server’s engine version it is running on.
“Performance and stability are key for Layershift customers, so I’m very excited to offer the latest stable PHP 7 release across our platform on fully certified Jelastic containers. The performance improvements in PHP 7 are incredible, but because Jelastic uniquely charges by resource consumption instead of by instance size, PHP 7’s lower resource usage also saves our customers’ money!” said Damien Ransome, Service Director at Layershift.
A great emphasis was made on the language syntax enhancements – namely, the removal of the previous versions’ deprecated functionality and simultaneous improvement of language consistency. The detailed information on new features and backward incompatibility issues can be examined at the official Migrating from PHP 5.6.x to PHP 7.0.x document.
“We are very happy that Jelastic now can offer PHP 7 support. Many of our users, mainly with WordPress and Drupal applications will now be able to upgrade to this powerful version in order to gain higher performance and make their apps twice faster,” said Henrik Grankvist, COO at Elastx.
Being PHP oriented, this Jelastic release also brought some additional improvements connected with this programming language, such as:
- MongoDB Driver for PHP Update
In order to work with the MongoDB database, PHP requires a special low-level driver, that was recently updated. Thus, in the present 4.3 Jelastic Release, the new mongodb.so module was added to the pool of extensions, provided for PHP app servers by default.
- PHP Modules List Refactoring
Jelastic PaaS provides the most popular PHP modules out-of-box that allows to launch most of the applications without any code changes. Currently, all the newly created PHP app server containers will be launched only with several most commonly used modules enabled by default for a lower level of default resource consumption and more flexible extensions’ configurability. The rest of modules can be enabled manually in a few easy steps.
- External IPs Swap via CLI
In the current Platform update, the functionality of Jelastic CLI was complemented with a new method, that allows to swap external IP addresses among two nodes or to transfer an address to another instance. This lets update PHP and other applications to the newer versions without downtime.
“The most highly anticipated feature of the Jelastic 4.3 release for us and our customers, for sure, became PHP 7 support. Already after this engine version launch, we’ve got lots of requests on adding it to the platform. So we didn’t make our customers wait long, as flexibility in offered technologies is one of the main Jelastic PaaS benefits,” said Evgeniy Kozhuhovskiy, Deputy Director at MyCloud.by
