MENLO PARK, Calif. and HELSINKI, Sept. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — MariaDB® Corporation today announced it has acquired Clustrix, the pioneer in distributed database technology, for an undisclosed amount. With the acquisition, MariaDB adds scale-out capability that runs on premises with commodity hardware or in any cloud environment, with greater scalability and higher availability than other traditional distributed options such as Oracle RAC. The acquisition, which follows news of an additional investment in MariaDB to further database innovation, helps advance the MariaDB Labs mission to tackle the most extreme challenges in the database field, specifically around distributed computing, machine learning, and next-generation chips, memory and storage environments.

“Today, the choices for a scale-out database option are limited – go with a traditional solution like Oracle with high cost and bloat or choose a NoSQL solution that has limited capabilities for data integrity,” said Michael Howard, CEO, MariaDB Corporation. “With Clustrix, MariaDB can provide a better solution for our customers that have challenging scale-out enterprise environments. Our distributed solution will satisfy the most extreme requirements of our largest customers and gives them the freedom to break from Oracle’s lock-in.”

Clustrix distributed technology delivers more than 25 trillion transactions per month through its customers, which translates to datasets in the billions of rows. Compared to legacy systems like Oracle RAC, Clustrix scales with ease no matter the deployment size across commodity hardware.

“At Nielsen Marketing Cloud, we needed a high performance solution to process over 100,000 transactions per second,” said Brent Keator, VP of Infrastructure for Nielsen Marketing Cloud (formally eXelate). “Distributed technology from Clustrix combined with their world-class support team gave us the scale, performance and reliability that we could trust. With Clustrix becoming part of MariaDB, we’re excited to continue to use the technology that handles our high transaction workloads with ease while using the popular, modern MariaDB platform with its proven enterprise functionality.”

MariaDB is adaptable regardless of workload requirements thanks to an architecture that supports pluggable, purpose-built storage engines. This unique approach eliminates the need for a variety of specialized databases, enabling organizations to use a single complete database regardless of the workload and without compromising core enterprise features like standard SQL and ACID compliance.

This is MariaDB’s second acquisition this year. In March, the company announced it bought MammothDB in a move that immediately strengthened its modern analytics solution, MariaDB AX, and advanced its larger Database-as-a-service (DBaaS) strategy.

MariaDB uses pluggable, purpose-built storage engines to support workloads that previously required a variety of specialized databases. With complexity and constraints eliminated, enterprises can now depend on a single complete database for all their needs, whether on commodity hardware or their cloud of choice. Deployed in minutes for transactional or analytical use cases, MariaDB delivers unmatched operational agility without sacrificing key enterprise features including real ACID compliance and full SQL. Trusted by organizations such as Deutsche Bank, DBS Bank, Nasdaq, Red Hat, The Home Depot, ServiceNow and Verizon – MariaDB meets the same core requirements as proprietary databases at a fraction of the cost. No wonder it’s the fastest growing open source database. Real business relies on MariaDB™.
